The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia has received the Special Commendation for sustainability in the European Museum of the Year Award 2015 competition. The awards were announced in Glasgow May 16th.

The main price was awarded to Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A special commendation was received overall by five museums. Each of them filled the criteria required from the main price winner. The special commendations are given to museums that have developed a new and innovative aspect of their public service and from which other European museums can learn.

Haltia was praised for its environmental education, which encourages youth to explore the nature and take environment into account. Haltia´s building was also acclaimed for its ecological efficiency and was applauded as an example of healthy cooperation between man and nature.

“This special commendation has lifted Haltia among the great European museums. We are delighted by the fact that Haltia was awarded exactly for achieving its goal: encouraging people to go outdoors”, says Haltia´s director Tom Selänniemi.
