Nuuksio National Park turns 20: free admission to Haltia for other 20-year-olds!

The 1st of March marked 20 years since the founding of Nuuksio National Park. Throughout the year, Metsähallitus Natural Heritage Services will celebrate the anniversary in cooperation with various companies and associations in Nuuksio and the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia next to the National Park. The main celebration will take place in the last week of May, when several trips and events will be organized for visitors.

To celebrate the anniversary, twenty-year-olds enjoy free admission to the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia. Everyone born in 1994 can visit Haltia’s exhibitions for free from 1 March to the end of 2014.

Many highlights in the spring

The hiking and nature photography themed public event organized on 15 March serves as a kick-off for this spring’s nature trips. Visitors can upgrade their hiking gear ecologically and economically downstairs in Haltia, at the specialized flea market organized by local hiking associations.

During the day, visitors to Haltia’s auditorium can benefit from the expertise of Pekka Punkari, a skilled nature photographer, who introduces the secrets of skilled photography. The Camera Hunting photograph adventure created by Kaikuva, a specialist in nature experiences, gives young photographers handy tips to get started with nature photography.

On the same day, Haltia will open The Son of the Forest, a temporary exhibition introducing the life work of a legendary Finnish nature photographer Hannu Hautala. Hautala will tell stories from throughout his long career in the auditorium, and will provide background information for the works of the exhibition. Also present are specialists from Rajala ProShop camera store, introducing this spring’s new camera models. Admission to the programme in the auditorium, photography adventure, and flea market is free.

Nuuksio’s anniversary year will culminate at the turn of spring and summer. On the European Day of Parks on 24 May and on the first anniversary of the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia on 31 May anyone can visit Haltia free of charge. Many nature events will be organized in the last week of May around Haltia and Nuuksio.

The second Finnish Nature Day will be celebrated on 30th August, with the main event being organized in the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia. The visitors can, amongst other things, learn more about mushrooms as the season is at its best, or try geocaching (GPS-aided treasure hunting) in the National Park. More trips will be organized in the autumn.

In its first two decades, the popularity of the National Park has grown steadily as more and more people have discovered this national treasure in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Based on visitor numbers, Nuuksio is Finland’s third most popular national park. 267 400 people visited in 2013, a more than 40% increase on the previous year.
