City of Helsinki

Helsinki, the modern and urban capital of Finland, is home to roughly 600,000 people and the most international destination in our country.

In 2000, Helsinki turned 450 years old and was selected as one of the European Capitals of Culture. In 2012, the city turns into the World Design Capital together with the cities of Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti.

Helsinki offers unique experiences all year round – more than 3,000 events, fascinating neighbourhoods and architectural layers, museums and cultural activities, the best shopping in the world, continuously updated cuisine and a dynamic night life.

A third of the city area is made up of a multitude of green zones, with only a 15-minute walk from the city centre to a dense Finnish forest in the Central Park. The city offers an abundance of activities, as its closeness to nature is complemented by its seaside location, with some 300 islands and 120 kilometres of shoreline. The Fortress of Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the gem of maritime Helsinki.

The Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau is a partner of the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia. Closeness to nature and genuine Finnish forests are the assets of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area that we wish to show to visitors from near and afar.
